CONTEXT

The adopted Local Plan records that Burford has a population of 1,300 which makes it the smallest of the District’s service centres, but it highlights that it has a level of services which belies its size and that it is one of West Oxfordshire’s most popular tourist attractions.   Many of the shops and facilities are in the vicinity of the application site with many of them being concentrated in and around the High Street which runs north south through the town, some 200m from the western edge of the site.

Burford is identified as a Rural Service Centre.  The Local Plan identifies Burford and Charlbury as being the focus for new development within the Burford – Charlbury Sub Area.   They are suitable for modest levels of growth which would be at an appropriate scale and type to reinforce their existing service centre roles.
